H. C. R. 23--"Naming the bridge crossing the New River on Route
41 at Prince in Fayette County, West Virginia, "The Thomas Buford
Pugh Memorial Bridge."
Whereas, Mr. Pugh was born April 24, 1908, in Dorfee, West
Virginia to Thomas Levi Pugh and Mary Ada Rock; and
Whereas, Mr. Pugh at age seventeen left school to join the
United States Marine Corps where he went on to receive the
Nicaraguan Medal of Merit from the President of Nicaragua,
awarded for excellent service at the Battle of Ocotal on July 16,
1927; and
Whereas, Mr. Pugh returned to school and graduated from Concord
College in May, 1934, and went on to teach General Sciences at
Beckley Jr. High School; and
Whereas, Mr. Pugh sought to further his education and proceeded
to obtain his master's degree in Physical Education and
Industrial Arts from the University of Arizona at Flagstaff in
September, 1947; and
Whereas, Mr. Pugh returned with his family, wife Eva Parks,
children Thomas, Patrick and Virginia, to West Virginia where he
taught school for twenty-two years, first at Beckley Jr. High
then at Shady Springs Jr. High; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the bridge crossing the New River on Route 41 at Prince
in Fayette County, West Virginia, be named "The Thomas Buford
Pugh Memorial Bridge," and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates is
hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the
family of Mr. Pugh, the Governor and Secretary of the Department
of Transportation.
